Hong Kong Sets 2030 Quantum Deadline for Banks, Highlights Challenges for Bitcoin
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has issued a report targeting quantum resistance for banks by 2030, while Bitcoin’s approach to quantum risks relies on decentralized community consensus without formal deadlines.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has released a white paper evaluating the local banking sector's readiness for quantum computing threats, giving it a low score of 2.3 out of 10 and outlining a goal for full preparedness by 2030. This initiative comes amid growing concerns that advances in quantum computing could undermine traditional cryptographic security used in financial systems.
Bitcoin, which also relies heavily on cryptography, faces similar vulnerabilities if quantum computing progresses as anticipated. However, unlike regulated banking institutions, Bitcoin operates without a central governing body that could establish a preparedness timeline. Any upgrades or changes to Bitcoin’s security infrastructure must be agreed upon through broad community consensus among network participants. Currently, there is no clear timeframe for such a transition, and perspectives within the Bitcoin community remain divided on how and when to address quantum risks.
The contrast underscores fundamental differences between regulated financial sectors and decentralized blockchain protocols in addressing systemic technological threats. As quantum computing continues to develop, monitoring responses across both traditional and decentralized systems will be important for understanding the broader security landscape.
