CZ Suggests Centralized Exchanges May Offer More Security Than Self-Custody

Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of Binance, has recently shared his perspective that centralized exchanges may provide greater security than self-custody for many crypto users. CZ supported his argument by referencing data from Bitcoin analyst Willy Woo and emphasized the role of Binance's SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) as an extra safeguard for clients in the event of security breaches.

Self-custody—where individuals maintain full control of their crypto assets through private wallets—is widely promoted for those who prioritize autonomy and privacy. However, CZ pointed out risks associated with private key management, including loss of funds due to forgotten passwords, mismanagement, or inadequate security practices by individuals. Centralized exchanges like Binance often maintain insurance funds such as SAFU to reimburse users in case of hacks or other incidents. Nonetheless, the crypto community remains divided over the best approach to asset custody. Proponents of self-custody highlight the importance of personal control and minimizing reliance on any single third party.
