Tether, a prominent stablecoin issuer, has frozen funds held in 131 TRON (TRX) wallets following an update to the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions targeting ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K). The move aligns with regulatory efforts to block financial resources tied to entities designated by OFAC for alleged connections to international terrorist activity.
The recent action, effective July 1, was prompted by OFAC's new list, which now designates 134 cryptocurrency addresses as identifiers for ISIS-K. Of these, 131 are associated with the TRON blockchain and three with Monero (XMR). By freezing the identified wallets, Tether aims to comply with the latest US financial sanctions and stem the use of stablecoins and other digital assets for illicit purposes.
This development highlights ongoing concerns about the potential for cryptocurrencies to be used in circumventing traditional financial controls. While decentralized platforms offer new possibilities for global payments, they also present challenges in monitoring and restricting sanctioned activity. Observers note that further regulatory and compliance measures may be expected as authorities and blockchain projects seek to adapt to evolving risks.
It remains unclear what volume of funds was held across the affected wallets or whether additional addresses could be targeted in future updates.
