A project has introduced a potential method to recover Bitcoin wallets compromised by future quantum computers, though the solution would not apply to Satoshi Nakamoto’s original holdings.

Project Eleven has announced the development of a recovery tool aimed at addressing security threats posed by future quantum computers to Bitcoin wallets. The tool relies on the premise that a wallet's key-derivation path—essentially the process by which wallet keys are generated—could serve as a new form of ownership verification if quantum attacks eventually make it possible to forge traditional cryptographic signatures. Early testing reportedly shows the tool operates efficiently, completing its process in under a quarter of a second on standard laptop hardware.
However, notable limitations remain. The approach would not be applicable to Bitcoin addresses lacking key-derivation paths, including the early wallets attributed to Bitcoin’s creator. As a result, the reported 1.1 million bitcoins linked to Satoshi Nakamoto’s addresses would not be protected by this method.
Quantum computing remains a theoretical rather than imminent threat to blockchain security, but researchers and developers are seeking proactive strategies to mitigate possible vulnerabilities. The practical effectiveness and adoption of such recovery tools will likely depend on broader community discussion and continuing advancements in cryptographic technology.
