Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has announced that it utilized in-house artificial intelligence technology to investigate the $387 million Bitget hack, which took place on September 24. According to the company, their AI-assisted analysis helped trace the movement of stolen crypto assets across four separate blockchains, in an urgent attempt to follow the funds as hackers moved them through the crypto ecosystem.
Chainalysis indicated their investigation linked the hack to actors associated with North Korea. This event reportedly pushed the estimated total amount of cryptocurrency allegedly stolen by North Korean-affiliated entities in 2026 above $1 billion, based on the firm's assessment. The tracing process, as described by Chainalysis, involved rapidly sifting through complex, multi-chain transactions that have increasingly characterized large-scale exploits and thefts in the sector.
While details on the ongoing investigation and potential recovery efforts remain limited, the use of advanced AI in cryptocurrency forensic analysis appears to be an emerging trend in the industry’s response to sophisticated threat actors. The impact on individual users and affected platforms will depend on continuing investigative outcomes and possible law enforcement cooperation.
This case highlights the ongoing security concerns and the technical challenges associated with tracing illicit crypto transactions, particularly when conducted across multiple blockchain networks.
